Mumtaz celebrate winning Restaurant of the Year Award – for the second year

Mumtaz restaurant in Bradford has been awarded the prestigious Restaurant of the Year title (North East region) for the second year running in the British Curry Awards 2019.

The annual award coincides with the multi-million-pound Kashmiri cuisine business set to unveil its latest expansion strategy, with plans to open its first restaurant outside of Yorkshire.

Dubbed the Oscars of Indian cuisine, Mumtaz’ Great Horton Road restaurant saw off fierce competition from across the North to clinch the top title for a second year at a star-studded awards dinner in London.

There to collect the award was the restaurant’s director Maryam Mumtaz, a third-generation director in the family business.

Said Maryam: “It is such an honour to win the top award for the region, and it is extremely difficult to do two years running when the judges’ expectations are already so high. The recognition has come at the perfect time as we celebrate 40 years in the food industry with some of the most ambitious expansion plans we have ever undertaken for Mumtaz.

Mumtaz restaurants started out in the family kitchen where they made samosas for the Bradford’s growing Asian community. Roll forward 40 years the emphasis is still on creating mouth-watering home-made food with Mumtaz now one of the UK’s largest ethnic ready meal suppliers, also serving a growing international market.

Over the decades Mumtaz has led on many industry innovations such as producing the UK’s first ever Halal baby food and hosting some of the world’s leading politicians and royalty at its famous Bradford restaurant.

Ambitious growth plans for the family-owned business are also being finalised, expanding from its current two outlets in Bradford and Clarence Dock, Leeds, to take the Mumtaz restaurant brand to other major cities across the UK. A seven-figure investment package will see the first Mumtaz restaurant outside of Yorkshire open in London later in 2020 , with Birmingham to follow.

The move out of Yorkshire will create around 50 jobs, as well as expansion at its food development and preparation operations based in West Yorkshire.
