Pneuma Hospitality Group, the business behind the major refurbishment and reimagination of iconic Gateshead restaurant and bar, SIX Rooftop, has added another site to its restaurant portfolio, 176 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough.

With the building’s keys securely in hand at the close of 2023, the team quickly set about undertaking an ambitious programme of investment and refurbishment, specifically designed to breathe new life into the site, previously home to two former stalwarts of the Middlesbrough dining scene; Ta Moko and Smoke & Mirrors, adding a vibrant casual bar and dining venue to the town’s food and drink offer.

A significant initial investment has enabled the team to have added extensive kitchen facilities, reimagined the downstairs interiors and bar space to create chic, contemporary and comfortable spaces where guests can relax and enjoy their surroundings.

Meanwhile, upstairs isn’t being neglected either, additional investment in this space is enabling the team to begin a consolidated programme of work to update and enhance this part of the building too.

As well as the dining and bar offer the venue will also be able to cater for a wide range of private hire functions; including christenings, birthdays, engagement parties, wedding celebrations and company parties and events.

Alongside significant investment, the development of 176 Bar & Kitchen, has also seen the creation of five new jobs, with more to follow as the venue grows and further develops its offer in the coming months.

Food Director Greg Lambert and 176 Bar and Kitchen’s Head Chef Megan Mann have worked closely together to develop a contemporary menu celebrating the very best of British, utilising sustainably sourced high-quality ingredients from local producers and suppliers.

The Kitchen as a result will serve up its modern takes on classic British dishes from today (Thursday 25th January), when the kitchen opens for its first ever food service:

Lite Bites will include the likes of Split Pea Pudding with caramelised mushrooms and soldiers, Sage & Onion Sausage Roll, with red onion marmalade, and Chorizo Scotch Egg.

Small Plates will include Buttermilk Fried Chicken with green garlic mayo, Ham Hock Terrine with pumpkin piccalilli and sourdough, and Crunchy Squid with hot lemon butter and tartare sauce.

Whilst for those with a sweet tooth desserts will include classics like Sticky Toffee Pudding, with butterscotch and vanilla ice cream and Passion Fruit Crème Brûlée.

The same attention to detail has also been lavished on 176’s bar offer too, with local sourcing at its heart, with coffee sourced from local speciality coffee roastery Rounton, Middlesbrough, tea from Storm Tea, Blaydon-on-Tyne, as well carefully selected spirits, including whisky and gin from across the north.

There’s an extensive wine list too featuring wines by the glass and by the bottle, a house cocktail menu and speciality Espresso Martini menu, with each expression made with Rounton’s Speciality Coffee, and not forgetting a selection of local and international craft beers by the can, bottle and served on draft, as well as a selection of non-alcoholic drinks, juices and sodas.

Food Director Greg Lambert said: ‘’176 Bar & Kitchen is the second venue the Pneuma Hospitality Group has created since the close of 2023. As a company we are determined to create a series of vibrant venues across the north. Spaces that breathe new life into the buildings  they inhabit, spaces that people want to visit time and time again.’’

Adding: ‘’Each location in our portfolio has its own distinctive character, which is underpinned by our simple ethos – to deliver friendly and relaxed service, set against the backdrop of a contemporary dining and bar space, serving locally sourced produce to our guests that support the both the local economy and help us play our part in reducing our impact on our surroundings as we aim to reduce our environmental footprint.’’
