This historic city in northern England is preparing to transform itself into a glittering winter wonderland once again, as the much-anticipated York Ice Trail returns for another year, promising to captivate visitors with a stunning array of frozen sculptures.
Organized by Make It York, the city’s destination management organization, the York Ice Trail will take place on the weekend of Feb. 1 and 2, 2025, with the theme of “Origins.” The event will narrate tales of beginnings, both real and mythical, through intricate ice carvings scattered throughout York’s ancient streets.

From 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, visitors can wander freely through the city, uncovering icy creations inspired by stories untold or those rumoured to be true. The trail will feature over 20 ice sculptures crafted by Icebox, the UK and Europe’s leading ice sculpture specialist, placed at various iconic locations.
In addition to the sculptures, the extraordinary weekend will offer live ice-carving demonstrations, interactive experiences, and the chance to win prizes. The event promises to captivate visitors of all ages, inviting them to immerse themselves in the magic of York’s origins.
The York Ice Trail has become a beloved annual tradition, drawing thousands of visitors to the city each year. Last year’s event, themed “City of Dreams,” was a resounding success, attracting over 67,000 visitors to York over the weekend. An online survey revealed that 9 out of 10 visitors would recommend the trail to family and friends and would want to return for the next instalment.
The free trail also had a positive impact on local businesses, with 75% of visitors dining or drinking at cafes, bars, and restaurants, and 50% likely to go shopping during their visit.
