This September is the perfect opportunity to get a little autumnal inspiration and meet the baker behind multi-award-winning bakery Ginger Bakers.

Throughout September head honcho Lisa Smith, will be out and about at a host of foodie events across Cumbria. She’ll be sharing a little of her story, total love of cakes and treating punters to little slices of heaven as they get the chance to sample some of the simply stunning cakes and bakes that Lisa and her team create using local, natural and carefully sourced ingredients.

September’s shenanigans get underway at Holker Chilli Fest, on 8th & 9th September as Lisa ensures festival goers get a little hot under the collar when the tuck into samples of her Chilli Choc Brown Tart and Chilli and Lime Brownie topped with a little bit of Mr Vikki’s Chilli Jam…

Then it’s off to the Westmorland County show on 12th September to join in the fun and celebrate the second year of the Lake District’s UNESCO World Heritage Status with a little slice of her Westmorland Pepper Cake (which incidentally had been shortlisted as a finalist in the Best British Speciality category in the annual Great British Food Awards).

What you might not know is that Lisa’s Westmorland Pepper Cake is something of a triumph reviving a distinctive spiced fruitcake hailing from the old county of Westmorland…

The cake recipe is based on a classic fruit cake, with dried currants and raisins in the batter, however, that’s where the similarity ends… the unusual addition of a number of spices; including ground cloves, ginger, cracked black pepper and black treacle give this cake it’s unique flavour.

And in 2014 Lisa’s version of Westmorland Pepper Cake was granted Forgotten Food status by the Slow Food Movement as part of their Ark of Taste project – how nifty is that!

Then it’s off to the first ever Rheged Food & Drink Show being held on 14th & 15th September where she will join the foodie throng and perhaps rub shoulders with the likes of Jay Rayner and hopefully share a little cake with the food impresario and even twist his arm a little in a bid to get him to include a Ginger Bakers cake or two in his last supper selection…

Finally, Lisa and team will be heading to the Taste Cumbria Food Festival, Cockermouth 28th & 29th September to celebrate the 10th year of the festival, for what promises to be a weekend filled with food and music.
