Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery is thrilled to unveil a newly-expanded Bistro offering.

This week marks the launch of a new seasonal menu featuring sharing-style dishes in the Bistro (or Bēodern in Old English). This communal sharing approach is in keeping with how Anglo-Saxons would gather at meal times: everyone eating around a table in their lord’s hall, enjoying food cooked over a long open-fire pit alongside.

The Bistro’s new sharing menu offers the real taste of Northumberland: the finest local produce, fresh ingredients and bold flavours.  Dishes include lamb stew with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables; cod with bacon crumble, roasted aubergine and preserved tomato; hake with borlotti beans, smoked tomato emulsion and watercress; and flat iron steak with hispi cabbage, chive mash and green peppercorn sauce.

Puddings include Madagascan vanilla and Tácnbora whisky crème brulée; Ad Gefrin cranachan made with Flýte whisky cream, raspberries, and honey; crumble with Tácnbora whisky crème anglaise; Doddington Dairy and Morwick Dairy ice creams, and some superb local cheeses.

Ad Gefrin now also offers night-time dining on Friday evenings from Friday 4th October. The new evening menu picks up where the daytime menu ends, finessing the style of the popular sharing plates and deserts into a more sophisticated evening offer, celebrating seasonality and creating a wonderful cosy ambience as the lights come down.

A brilliant bar offering complements the new menu with excellent wines and signature seasonal cocktails, such as the Lammas (Autumn)-themed Bremelberie, Tacnbora Hiball, Whisky Buck, Bramble and Negroni – all crafted from Ad Gefrin’s own spirits.

Ad Gefrin’s Bistro is open from 10am to 6pm every day serving from our daytime menu.

On Fridays the Bistro is open until late, with tables available from 5pm.
