The Borrowdale Gates Hotel

Guests visiting The Borrowdale Gates Hotel can enjoy the benefits of its impressive refurbishment with work to the country house hotel now complete.

The seven-figure sum committed to upgrading the property included refreshing all of its central areas plus all 32 rooms and suites.

The transformation was undertaken by the Borrowdale Gates Hotel team alongside hotel management company, Providence Hotels.

The four silver star retreat, which also has two AA Rosettes for its restaurant, is located in the jaws of the Borrowdale Valley in the picturesque Lake District. It is perfectly situated to offer an idyllic retreat for those seeking to immerse themselves in the array of local activities as well as the natural beauty and tranquility of Grange-in-Borrowdale.

The Borrowdale Gates Hotel remained open throughout the works, which were completed in phases and carefully managed by their management company Providence Hotels, for guests to continue to enjoy stays without interruption.

Originally a magnificent private residence, the Borrowdale Gates opened as a hotel in 1866 and maintains the lovely, homely atmosphere of a genuine country house. Carefully modernised, it has a fresh and airy look inspired by its outdoors environment that is welcoming rather than over-designed.

The lounge and bar area comprises cosy sofas to enjoy a book or refreshment in front of an open fire with full-length windows which look out across the hotel’s three acres of wooded grounds, farm animals in the field and the Borrowdale Valley.

Eating in the large and light dining room, with its comfortable, well-spaced tables, is a smart, yet relaxed affair. The food, too, is fine-dining quality offering a unique combination of traditional British dishes and classic French cuisine, passionately created by head chef, Christopher Standhaven. The captivating fell views enjoyed by diners complements the archetypal country house cooking.

The new look rooms are well equipped with all the amenities a guest may need during their stay and each has a modern bathroom. Each room offers a comfortable space to relax.
The country house hotel offers various rooms to suit the needs of all guests including Classic, Deluxe and Superior rooms as well as Deluxe Family Rooms which feature a convenient layout for families with a twin-bedded room alongside a double-bedded room.

For the ultimate, luxurious getaway, the Garden Suites stand out with their vast living spaces and added finishing touches including plush bathrobes and coffee machines.

Sue Willan, General Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be showcasing the final results of our refurbishment which has transformed the guest experience at Borrowdale Gates Hotel.

“From the outset, our goal was to create a small slice of understated luxury that reflects the stunning natural backdrop of the Lake District, and complements the superb, locally sourced menu in our restaurant and the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere our team creates for guests during their stay.

“The local area has so much to offer visitors of all ages. Alfred Wainwright, renowned fell walker and writer, once wrote that the nearby Castle Crag is the ‘loveliest square mile in the Lake District’.

“Whether guests are looking for a peaceful escape, the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and the many scenic walks on our doorstep, or an activity-led break and our new look country house hotel is the perfect base.”

Dagmar Jungbauer, Director of Operations at Providence Hotels reflects: “Maintaining operations while undergoing the refurbishment was no small feat, but we wanted to ensure guests could still enjoy the comfort and hospitality they’ve come to expect from the Borrowdale Gates Hotel.”

Danie Bester, Group Facilities Manager at Providence Hotels, added: “This monumental endeavor marks a significant milestone for the Borrowdale Gates Hotel, reflecting its unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled guest experience.

“I worked closely with Sue, Dagmar and our interior designer to create spaces that embody warmth, elegance and modernity and that connect with our guests on a personal level, offering a destination they can feel truly at home in.”
