Leeds’ award-winning cheesemonger George & Joseph has officially declared the start of Cheesemas, kicking off its biggest festive cheese season yet with new arrivals, limited-edition specials and in-store tastings.
The Chapel Allerton favourite is transforming its shop into the city’s ultimate festive cheese destination, offering more than 80 cheeses plus chutneys, charcuterie, crackers and wine to complete every Christmas board.
This year’s star attraction is St Bede, a brand-new Camembert-style cheese from acclaimed British cheesemaker Julie Cheney (St Jude). George & Joseph is the only cheesemonger in the country to secure it, receiving a tiny allocation of just 15 cheeses from 15 December.
Shoppers can also pick up a handmade ceramic Camembert baker by Hemsley ceramicist Iona Ceramics for peak molten-cheese indulgence.
Another festive showstopper hits the counter in the form of scoopable Gorgonzola Dolce, served straight from the wheel into small pots. Mild, creamy and utterly decadent, it promises rich flavour and pure theatre.
Founder Stephen Fleming said: “Christmas is when people really invest in great cheese so we want the whole experience to feel exciting and special. The Gorgonzola Dolce is one of the most indulgent blues out there, and watching it being scooped out is half the joy.”
What to expect in store this December
George & Joseph is known for its lively, friendly festive atmosphere, with the team handing out samples to queuing shoppers and helping customers discover new favourites.
Stephen’s top tips for choosing the perfect Christmas cheese:
Ask what’s tasting best today
Pair favourites with something new
Mix colours, textures and shapes for a standout board
Add festive accompaniments such as figs, chutneys and spiced nuts
Consider whole-cheese showstoppers like baked Camembert or Baby Stilton
Store cheese properly and serve at room temperature
Since launching in 2013, George & Joseph has built a loyal following for its exceptional British and European cheeses, with a strong focus on Yorkshire makers including Yoredale and Harrogate Blue. The team hand-selects every cheese and champions small-batch, artisan producers.
Stephen added: “Christmas is the most exciting time for cheesemongers. It’s when people discover just how extraordinary artisan cheese can be and why it’s worth supporting the makers behind it.”
