UNPOLLUTED dark skies, unspoilt countryside and being part of centuries of history are just some of the perks on offer to people working in the hospitality industry who might be looking for something different.
The Tan Hill Inn at Swaledale, North Yorkshire is known for being the highest pub in the UK and can not only trace its history back nearly 2000 years but has also been the backdrop for countless movies and tv shows. Its remote location is part of its appeal and drives tens of thousands of visitors to its doors every year – but the owner admits that this can also make recruiting staff at challenge.
But now Andrew Hields, who operates the Famous 3 which comprises The Tan Hill Inn, The Green Dragon Inn at Hadraw and the Station Inn at Ribblehead, has embarked on a recruitment campaign to showcase the advantages of working at his venues. “The Tan Hill Inn is internationally renowned and we are constantly welcoming visitors from around the world,” he said. “It’s a picture perfect location – no light pollution, stunning countryside and a really special place where we offer a fantastic experience. “We’re hoping that backdrop – and the strong packages we can offer staff – will appeal to people either currently working in the industry or looking for a start.”
Andrew is looking for experienced chefs but also for housekeepers, bar assistants and front-of-house managers for both the Tan Hill and The Green Dragon who he is prepared to train if they have not worked in these roles before. Currently there are about eight jobs up for grabs and the hope is that the setting and the opportunity to work somewhere unique will be attractive to anyone looking for a job.
“We recognise that for a lot of people travelling to and from the pubs each day is not easy, which is why we have specific shifts such as four days on followed by three days off,” he said. “We give accommodation for the days they are working and then that gives them three days when they can return home – which we also believe offers a great work/life balance.”
