Liverpool Prince’s Trust award-winner to open ‘Gladiators’-style activity park in Liverpool

Dung throwing… giant sandal racing… goat-milking… These outrageous ‘sports’ will soon be on offer to stag and hen dos, office outings and birthday parties, thanks to the opening of a new activity park in Liverpool.

The Romans promises to blend the wackiness of TV’s Takeshi’s Castle with the physical challenge of classic show The Gladiators. Other contests for up to 100 participants will include blindfolded boxing, the giant sandal racing and a bungee challenge.

The venue is the brainchild of Joe Clarke, 33, from Aintree, who was named a Prince’s Trust Enterprise Award winner last year after three years at the helm of hen and stag party operator, Spartacus Events.

Joe Clarke says “We’ve seen a massive rise in bookings for hen and stag parties coming to Liverpool to enjoy outdoor activities. The current trend in all things medieval, with the huge success of TV series such as Games of Thrones inspired me to devise a Roman-themed activity park. With a little bit of investment and lots of imagination I have now created something very unique”.

Clarke was set on Liverpool as the venue, after research amongst the UK’s top hen and stag party operators showed the city was the location of choice for bridesmaids and best men looking to give their mates a send-off to remember, before they tie the knot.

And he’s convinced the site next to Aintree Racecourse, with its excellent transport links to both Liverpool city centre and the motorways, will prove a hit.

“Our new Roman themed activity park is already attracting new bookings from hen and stag parties and, interestingly, we are now receiving enquiries from corporates looking to put on themed team-building events for their staff.”#

The activities are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Clarke was presented with the Princes Trust Enterprise Award in 2017. The Enterprise Award, sponsored by NatWest, recognises young people who have overcome barriers and achieved success in creating a sustainable business or social enterprise.

And he’s hoping to build on that experience, expand his business and continue his work with the Trust delivering inspirational talks to future entrepreneurs.

Clarke intends to expand the venture indoors with themed dinners and events which will include some of the games played at the park and reflect the outrageous nature and behaviour of the Romans.

Joe continues “I have seen many hen and stag parties over the years and I believe that whilst many are often perceived to be badly behaved, most are looking for fun and memorable experiences and something unique which, with a blend of games and amusing theatre, The Romans will undoubtedly offer.”

The bespoke 1,500 sq metre park includes eight games stations, a purpose-built coliseum, 6 Instagram stations and an outdoor gin garden. All participants will receive costumes, face painting and will meet and be hosted by gladiators, emperors and roman goddesses.

The park will be open between April and October.

The Romans has also partnered with Signature Living hotels to offer a unique range of packages which will be launching at an exclusive evening event at The Shankly Hotel on Thursday 7thFebruary.
